Something small, rugged, efficient, and reliable
I'm looking for the best 12 ga SG for all around. Something small, rugged, efficient, and reliable in horrible conditions.

Any suggestions or should I just stop by and see what feels good in my hands?

Cheers

Most shotguns made these days are reliable, but if your wanting something semi-auto that funtions great look at an FN MK1 if you see one buy it because from what I've heard thay wont be importing them any more. I was in the Get Some shop the other day and they had quite a few shotguns on the shelf.

Jack,
Also look at the Mossberg 930 SPX. I bought one last year, have put about 1500 rounds through it, and it performs flawlessly. You can probably get 2 SPX's for the price of one FN, and it's made in the USA.

Mossberg 500 series. I have a mossberg 500 mil spec. This is the ONLY shotgun to pass mil spec 3443E. 3000 rounds without a jam or misfire, including in horrible conditions. It has been the standard issue military tac/riot shotgun since 1979; Until a few years ago when the Army switched to Benneli (NATO comminality pressure I suspect). But just last year the Navy placed an order for 138,000 more of these. The 500 series is actually a starting point for a variety of configurations, whether it be home defense or hunting. Mine is fitted with a pistol grip and is only 24" long (Obviously configured for home defense). Also as stated above it is relativly inexpensive and Made in the USA.

I understand that the Benelli M4 (http://www.benelliusa.com/shotguns/benelli_m4.php) was designed first for our US Marines. What a lovely Shotgun! :)

On the subject of Mossberg 500's, They are indeed tanks that can take all sorts of abuse! My old 500 sure as heck did.

Re: Something small, rugged, efficient, and reliable
I do agree the M4 is a groovy weapon. I would like to make a couple of points. Everything a little off beat is almost always designed for the marines first. (e.g.: harrier jump jet, ossprey, 40mm automatic grensde lsuncher.) A standard Army infantry co. does not even have a shotguner slot. Naval and Marine units (just about all, including ships) all have lots of shotgun slots. That Iraq thing has made the army shift from offensive force to croud control/riot police. So now they needs shotguns... Lots of shotguns.
Which leads to the next problem with the M4 is that you cannot find them. I have called all over this valley and happy valley and none in stock all back ordered (All exept 2 stores which had one each with a very premium price tag; Like I could almost buy 3 500s for them same money.) Those that could give me a reason all said the same thing. The army was eating up all the new production.

Re: Something small, rugged, efficient, and reliable
I agree with all the previous posters; particularly the comments about the Mossberg 500 series. These shotguns are very reliable and are Made In The USA. If you are new to shotguns and price is an issue, Mossberg makes the Maverick series. A Maverick 88 12 gauge has an 18-2/4 inch barrel and the composite stock can be removed and replaced with a pistol grip or a combination pistol grip stock (or 6-position stock). The MSRP on a Mossberg Maverick 88 is $199 according to their website. This is a good home defense weapon, but the shorter barrel is not as accurate as a longer one for bird or other hunting. The Mossberg 500 line and the Maverick series are very similar, but the 500 series is a bit beefier, and thus a bit heavier. Both are very reliable. Both break down very easily and are uncomplicated and easy to clean and lubricate. You can preview the entire Mossberg line on their website.

Nobody mentioned Remmington, but they make some fine candidates as well.

Baretta makes a good shotgun, but these are mostly geared toward hunters and competition skeet shooters.

Best of luck in your decision (if you have not already made it.

Jim

Ahh yes, Remington. The venenerable 870 series is worth looking into. They have been in prodruction since the 50's and just like Mossys come in an infinite number of configurations. It was the Military issue until the Mossbergs came along. The small arms lockers on the ships I was on all had a couple dozen. If memory serves me right (big stretch here, long time ago) they were the model 870R.

Check 'em out at www.remington.com

Re: Something small, rugged, efficient, and reliable
I am not sure who the manufacturer is but on "Locked and Loaded" they showed an AA12 that can put out 10K (that;s thousands) rounds before it needs to be cleaned because it's made out of aluminum (SP?) I don't think any of us working people are going to even get a chance to sell a kidney to buy one if it were available to the public. But, wow it is impressive!
