Springfield XD Cal. Conversion
It is my understanding that if you purchase a new barrel and spring you can convert a 40 to a 357S or 9mm. With the proper barrel and spring can you convert from a 9mm to 357S?

Re: Springfield XD Cal. Conversion
Summary: Probably not. You can go down to smaller caliber, but you should not go up.

Explination:
You can decrease the caliber on some larger firearms (sometimes via neckdown ammo, sometimes barrel/spring replacements)
however increasing the calibur on a smaller gun is largely problematic. I don't think the reciever on most semi-automatic firearms are designed to handle larger caliber kick. It makes sense to me to consider that the weapon was designed to handle a specific range of pressure from the ammunition. When you change the load, you change that pressure. Going down is OK because you're well within that range. Going up? Seems pretty dangerous.

Revolvers may be a different story.

Re: Springfield XD Cal. Conversion
What Kmccoy said. Just wanted to add that revolvers are the same story. Unless the manufacturer says its OK, I would not try it. And I have tried some crazy things in the past, like pushing a 258 grain 45acp round out of the barrel of a GI 1911A-1 at over 1100 fps (clocked not calculated.)
Again I have to add a cautionary note to one of my posts. I developed this handload with the help of a master gunsmith in Neveda. There are several tricks to make this happen without risking injury or damage to your weapon. For starters you don't use a 45acp casing. Also it has no useful purpose. The round is too hot to group tightly out of an unmodified 1911 and it really hurts your hand :D
