First Handgun
I am looking to purchase my first handgun and am looking for advice. I would like to stay around the $350 range. I have been looking at the S&W Sigma Series 40. Any thoughts/advice are appreciated.

Thanks

Re: First Handgun
I have not personally shot the Sigma, but I do own a number of S&W handguns, which are mostly revolvers. The S&W name is very good, and they are world-known for their attention to detail and master craftmanship. Additionally, if the handgun is a .40 S&W caliber, the ammo is rather cheap and still very available for good prices. I really don't think you can go wrong here...

Keep me updated, and send pics when you do the purchase!

Re: First Handgun
One of the first things you need to do is try the feel of a number of firearms in your hand. Which ones fit the best? Which ones don't feel natural to you?

Once you find the ones that fit well, figure out what you plan to use it for. Concealed carry? Target shooting? Then narrow it down from there.

S&W makes very good firearms.

Re: First Handgun
1911A-1. The design is over 100 years old and is still in production by many manufacturers. 45ACP ammo is fairly cheap and available everywhere. I usually by gov't surpluss ball (fmj) ammo for $10 to $15 for a 50 rd box when I'm headed out to the desert to kill rocks. (Please note: "killing rocks" is just a saying. You should never aim a firearm at a rock unless you want to risk your bullet coming back at you.) Sure the original design only holds 7 rds but "if you need more than seven you're probably headed for heaven" (an old Gunney told me that one.) But if you really hate swaping mags there are models with extended and even fat grip mags that hold more.
The 1911 was designed to knock things down. This was a result of the Spanish-American war (1898.) When we took the Phillipines from Spain the U.S. had a serious problem with muslim berserkers from the northern provinces. The gov't wanted a handgun that would knock them down no matter where you hit them. Thus the most lasting handgun model in history was born.

Re: First Handgun
I love S&W handguns. I own two of them myself. The m&p .9 that I carry is a good reliable gun. I must warn you. Be sure to at least test out the triggers on the guns that you look at in the store if you are not able to shoot them prior to buying. My personal shopping experience has been that the trigger on the sigma is junk. It is heavy, gritty and has a crappy reset. The sigma just feels cheap. I am actually somewhat shocked that no one else on this forum has told you as much. I am not the only one around that shares in that opinion and the concensus is that the sigma is simply a CHEAP gun. The new SD that they came out with recently is just an updated sigma and nearly as bad. If you are looking for something full size in an affordable price range, some may disagree, but check out taurus. They have the best warranty out there and most tend to be decent guns at an affordable price. If you don't mind waiting a little longer, spring for $450 dollars and get an M&P or a Glock. I prefer the M&P but alot of guys like the glock. What ever works for you. Sad truth is, the sigma has worked well for pretty much nobody unless you want to put a couple hundred into it and get a decent trigger.

Re: First Handgun
You call .45ACP ammo cheap? on what planet. Of the most common semi-auto pistol rounds, that is the most expensive!
