Keeping in mind that there are a variety of options to the AR-15, you need to decide what uses you will have for it. What type of shooting do you plan to do? That will help narrow down some of the options and help you find the one you are looking for.

Jeepgunner makes some good points. There are so many different weapons of this type out there. Personally I prefer a Kalishnakov design type weapon. Yes you have to hump a bit more weight with one of these but there are a lot of countries making cheap knock-offs in any caliber you like for export to the U.S. And cheap does not mean any lack of performance or reliability (after all the original AK-47 was designed to be cheap.) You could also look into other NATO countries standard issue wpns (HK, et al.) which are sold as surpluss and imported. There are also many domestic made "ranch/varmitt" rifles that work very nicely as assault wpns too.
My rule of thumb is that if you are not sure never buy new retail (sorry GSG folks.); buy used or surpluss then if you aren't completely satisfied you still have a good firearm and you can start looking again. Of course this requires more legwork on your part and in the long run you may wind up spending more money but you will have more guns :D
Remember, everyone has personal preferences. So if you ask around you will find people that swear by a certain firearm but it may not fit your needs at all.
